Netherlands Netherlands Nijmegen

Back in town

Dear friends and family,

I am back in the Netherlands… so this is the last message concluding my not quite successful attempt at keeping an up-to-date website.

In fact, it is so long ago that I left a message here, that I am not even sure what to write. I imagine you might be lost as to my whereabouts even more. The last couple of months in Budapest passed quickly and were a blend of hard work, enjoying the good weather, dinner parties, study avoiding activities and more hard work. I have especially fond memories of the dinner parties. My two mexican friends, Ana and Guadalupe had moved in together into an appartment with an excellent kitchen. Every other week or so, someone was awarded the unofficial status of ‘cook-of-the-week’ and we would have the opportunity to try mouth-watering dishes from Lithuania, Mexico, Russia, the Balkan, the Philippines, Kenya and the Netherlands.

June 15th, two weeks before our last exam period, we witnessed the CEU graduation ceremony. For the legal students, it really was witnessing, for the other CEU students, it was real graduation. Equipped with cap and (synthetic) gown, we had to travel by public transport to the other end of the city and sit for 4 hours straight for our one chance to shake hands with CEU founding father, mister Soros himself. Ina, Rikus, Erzsi and Timon had flewn in to attend the ceremony and had the privilige of watching 450 students walking the stage from the balcony of the room.

July, I mostly spent in bed. On my way to the last exam, I injured my back and my world suddenly become very small: my bed in my room. It was rather unpleasant to be dependent for the simplest things, but helpful friends, magic hands, muscle relaxents, Hungarian health care, and countless seasons of Will&Grace dragged me through. My back still hurts now and again, but at least I am up and about and I can even carry my own groceries these days.

I am back in the Netherlands now… Back in Nijmegen, settled in a lovely room in an appartment that I share with two friends, Lotte and Charlie. With help from friends and family, I painted and IKEA-ed the room and now I have this tiny piece of paradise right here.
For snail mail: Iris Kieft, Van Gentstraat 8, 6524 BC Nijmegen.

My latest adventure was a trip to South-Africa. Perhaps, this message will turn out not to be the last one. I loved the trip and would like to share some of the stories with you. But for now, I do not want to drown you in text and will leave you with this link to the photos…

Take care, and those of you who are in the Netherlands: let’s meet in the near future.
Love iris

PS to the Budapest crowd...
I added your emailaddresses so that you can finally read what I have been writing about you guys all year Wink
I miss you all. And, Martin: i am very sorry that I forgot you

So good to hear from you, Iris! It's been much too long. I hope you come through Seattle, WA sometime for a legal conference... if Ben and I are ever able to scrape together enough money for a Europe trip, we'll definitely stop by and see you. I want to write tons more, but I'm at an internet cafe and have little time... I've got a blog-type website going on myspace: www.myspace.com/legalisse.

It was wonderful to hear from you!

hello, dear-dear!
I guess the number of comments, or at least the proportion of the not-in-dutch comments will increase significantly once you added us allSmile I am still trying to come up with a collective email to everybody, but i feel there is too much to say and too little I can say by mails.
your trip to South Africa seems to be great, at least VERY beautiful.
many kisses, sasha

Numerous episodes of Will&Grace would put me in the sick bed, if not the the psych ward. Glad u enjoyed your ceremony -- i skipped out on mine -- darn things are such a pain -- highschool had only 100 in the class and seemed to drag on forever and ever amen... god knows what having to sit through 500 would have been like.
Nederland has mouth-watering dishes? Geez, wish someone told my mom about them (joking -- please dont show this to her!)
Anywho, ive been doing some traveling too: Montreal, Vancouver Taipei and now finally in Matsumoto. Wish I had something to show for it all i have is a substantially shrunken bank account, and 4 zillion fotos clogging up my comp's harddrive...

Nice to be back in NDL? Say 'hi' to everyone there for me! Oh, and enjoy the rain!

Sayanora from JP!
